I remember reading that the 'Uniform Militia Act of 1792' had a huge effect on how gun ownership was viewed when it came to black people vs white. The act required all 'able-bodied white men' between the ages of 18-45 to own arms in case they were needed as part of a spontaneous militia. This act essentially normalized white male gun ownership and set the stage for viewing black gun ownership as a threat.
