The existence of a black slaveowner changes nothing, even if he was the one who invented slavery himself. Clearly, the fact you're presenting here wasn't substantial enough the change the course of history and prevent centuries of brutal, white-centered racial legislation. The only people that were obsessed with race were the Europeans that established this country and were desperate to feel some shred of superiority over African slaves. They felt a strong urge to differentiate themselves from those who worked for them.

This is a problem I find too often with these sort of contrarian pieces. One piece of contradictory evidence doesn't dismantle an entire argument. For you to believe that this fact in any way undercuts the arguments that the 1619 Project makes, you would have to have a severe misunderstanding of the project to begin with.
