You hit the nail on the head. My youth was littered with so many conversations like this. But I always remained firm that no, I do not know who Blink-182 is, I do not know a single song by the Beatles, and I have never listened to the likes of Guns N' Roses, etc. I am not white. So I was not raised around that type of music. That is not to say non-white people can't enjoy that type of music, i enjoy plenty of rock and even 'screamo', but my point is that white people see their experiences in life as 'default'. They can't even imagine someone else had a different upbringing, and music is a part of that.
